Willow Class - SRB

Welcome to Willow Class!

Willow Class is a Specialist Resource Base (SRB), providing specialist teaching for children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).  We work very closely with our speech therapy colleagues.  Places are allocated by the Local Authority.

A full time teacher and two teaching assistants work in the SRB supported every morning by a speech therapist.

Norfolk's Speech and Language SRBs also employ an outreach teacher who works with all five SRBs to provide advice, support and training for mainstream colleagues across the county.

Mrs Baker and Miss Kennedy work in Willow Class every day and Miss Glendinning for three days every week as well.

Our Speech Therapists usually work with us every morning. As NHS employees, they are not able to come into school to work directly with the children at the moment, so each child is being supported in a weekly 'Teletherapy' session. Our trained Teaching Assistants will then continue the work each day through the week.

There are lots of things to remember every week!

  • Monday is breakfast day - We have breakfast together first thing in the morning and catch up on news from the children's mainstream schools and from the weekend.
  • Thursday is PE - Don't forget to come to school in your kit!
  • We will also be using the wildlife garden for outdoor learning on a Thursday and plan to do so whatever the weather! We have plenty of wellies and waterproofs and will try not to get too wet and muddy!
  • Friday is 'home school' day - The children all attend their mainstream classes.

Our learning in Willow Class

To meet the children's speech and language needs we offer intensive speech therapy support as well as specialist teaching throughout the school day.

The children are taught in line with the National Curriculum at the right level to meet their needs and we teach the full range of curriculum subjects - always with a focus on the children's speech and language targets.

Alongside daily literacy and maths teaching in small groups, we use a broadly topic based approach to teaching the curriculum with lots of practical activities to encourage communication skills.

How can you support your child?

Talking and listening are the most important things. Give your child time to talk and be the best role model you can be when you talk to them as well. Try to make sure you have a quiet time to talk and listen at least once every day, without a lot of background noise! Share books and talk and ask questions about what you read together.

We will let you know what your child's speech targets are and they will also have a number of 'target words' that you can look out for and help them with when you are chatting. It is best to focus on the things they are learning at the moment - rather than trying to correct every mistake that they make!

Communication

For now, we will not be able to invite parents to spend time with their children in Willow Class, or to meet with us 'face to face.' If you have a question please call the school office and we will call you back as soon as we can.

We will also be using our online classroom to let you know what we have been doing and to communicate directly with you about your child. Your child's home school class teacher will also be able to join this classroom so that we can share information with then as well.  Your child will have received an individual secure login for this site - please have a look!
