Our day starts at 8.45am and finishes at 3.15pm, children can be brought around the one way system and enter the classroom via the outside door. They will need to use handgel as they enter the classroom.
What to expect in Year 4:
This year you will be building on what you have learnt so far in Key Stage 2. You will grow as individuals and learn how to manage your own equipment and daily routines.
We have heard great things about you from Mrs Southernwood and are looking forward to helping you grow throughout the year.
It will be important to learn to work as a team - this is essential for getting the most out of Year 4. You will need to be thoughtful and considerate to the feelings of your classmates, so that we can all progress together.
This year, you will build on your work from Year 3 by completing writing in a range of genres such as: creating play scripts and poems, character profiles and formal letters.
You will add depth and detail to your descriptive writing and make better use of paragraphs and the punctuation you used in Year 3.
We will look at our understanding of what we read and learn about inference within an authors writing. We will also look at predicting how a story may progress and justifying our opinions.
You will continue to build on your Key Stage 2 learning from Year 3, adding and subtracting increasingly large numbers both mentally and using formal written methods.
This is also true for the multiplication and division problems we will learn to solve - this will be helped by learning our times tables up to 12 x 12.
We will look at perimeter and area, where our times tables knowledge will be essential. Our knowledge of fractions and decimals will grow, as well as our confidence using both the 12 and 24 hour clock.
We have some interesting topics to cover this year, starting with a dive into the deep in our Science-based topic: What lives in the Ocean?
We will look at life in our oceans and how it has adapted to live in different conditions, how they might hunt their prey and how they might avoid being eaten themselves.
We will learn about how creatures survive and reproduce as part of an investigation into life cycles.
How you can help your child's learning journey
Continue to help them in the ways you would normally. Listen to them read as often as possible -
I cannot stress enough how helpful this one act is for every other learning activity.
Practice times tables regularly, talk to them about their day - perhaps ask them to teach you something that they found out about each day. Help them with their homework. Encourage them to read by showing enthusiasm for their book preferences, then ask them to tell you about what they are reading. Visit a library to just look around until something grabs their interest.
They are not too old to be read to either - read something to them that they might not usually read, then discuss your interpretation of the text, or explain some of the technical vocabulary to them - we all know that kids love to learn technical vocabulary to bamboozle their friends with.
We have reached the second half of the Summer term and our last topic is all about sound.
In this topic, we will find out all about how sound is made, how it travels and how we sense it. We will investigate volume and pitch of sound, and why sound 'fades' the further you are from it.
In Literacy, we will study some poetry and apply the tools we learn about to create our own poetic masterpieces.
Following on from the work we completed before half-term, we will dive further into how stage directions alone can be used by actors to develop an on-stage story, without the need for dialogue.
In preparation for upper key stage 2, we will look closely at literary tools such as similes, metaphors and onomatopoeia, which help us create fantastically descriptive written works.
We will also link to our topic work and develop a radio advert using all our literary skills.
There is still a little work to be done on fractions after the half term break, and when we are confident with this, we will move on to looking at multiples and finding multiples of amounts.
There should be time at the end of the half-term to revisit and refresh some of the skills covered earlier in the year and during lockdown, which will help to prepare the class for their Year 5 maths work.
A reminder that TIMES TABLES knowledge is essential for almost all areas of Maths, so please keep practicing!
In geography we will map the different styles of music to be found around the world, and trace the roots of different genres of popular and folk music.
Science is full of investigations into sound; what it is, how it works, where it comes from and where it goes.
We will also be investigating electrical circuits and adding a variety of components to basic circuits in an effort to understand how electricity works, how it travels and where it goes.
In Art and DT, develop our creative skills and eye for detail as we plan, create and refine a stop-motion movie and set it to music. We will use this as part of an advertising campaign developed during our ICT lessons.
In RE, we will look at how people around the world commit to their religion and how their religion might affect their world view.
In PSHE, we will continue to look at a variety of topics including: Peer pressure, healthy lifestyles, and how we might develop physically, mentally and emotionally to enable us to look after ourselves.
In Music, we are lucky enough to be able to continue our Ukulele lessons with Ms Liddament.
I am looking forward to another great term with some added bonuses of the sun shining and the possibility of some local field trips too! I think it's going to be a great half-term and can't wait to get started!
Welcome to our first Summer topic!
This half term, we will be looking at all things Ancient Egypt. We will look at the astonishing achievements of this ancient civilisation, how they lived and, of course, some of the gory and disgusting details of their everyday lives.
In Literacy, we will find out about the tomb of Tutankhamun and the events leading up to it's discovery, which we will present as a chronological report. Then we will investigate and present fact about everyday life in Ancient Egypt. Following this, we will create our own mystery narrative story about the discovery of an Ancient Tomb. We will also learn about and create playscripts, using an Ancient Egyptian setting.
In Maths, we will spend some time learning about fractions, which is an important skill to master in Year 4 (it is really essential to have an understanding of fractions to take into Year 5) - once again, TIMES TABLES knowledge is essential for this area of Maths, so please keep practicing!
In History, we will be delving deeper into the contents and secrets of Tutankhamun's tomb, and finding out about the role Pharaohs played in Ancient Egyptian life, and what happened to them when they died. This will link in to our investigation into the beliefs of the Ancient Egyptians, their deities and the afterlife.
In Science, we will investigate what techniques were used to preserve food (and other things) in Ancient Egypt - and we will be attempting to preserve some of our own soft, fleshy foods in the same ways.
In Art and DT, we will find out about Ancient Egyptian headwear. We will then design and create our own headwear based on what we have discovered. We will also look at Ancient Egyptian architecture in our DT lessons.
In RE, we will look at how religion deals with poverty and justice, as well as continuing our investigations into how religion can lead people to live a 'good' life.
In PSHE, we will look at a variety of topics including: Peer Pressure and how we react to stressful situations on our own and with our friends. Medicinal and legal drugs, their uses and misuse. Puberty, its effects on us and how we develop physically and mentally during this period. Hazards in everyday life and how to avoid them.
In Music, we will continue our Ukulele lessons with Ms Liddament.

This half-term we will be looking at 'states of matter' and how solids, liquids and gases change when they are heated and cooled.
In Literacy, we will create instructions for our own potions and labels to stick on bottles of our noxious concoctions. We will also be writing formal letters about the state of modern anaesthesia compared to in ancient times, as well as looking at playscripts and poetry (...hubble, bubble, toil and trouble..!).
In maths, we will first look at our knowledge of decimals and place value, before spending several week refreshing and adding to our knowledge of fractions.
There will be lots of 'icky' potions and medicines to find out about in our History lessons, and we hope to be able to get into the kitchen before Easter to mix up our very own cauldron of... Easter biscuit mixture!
The topic for the first half term in spring is an exciting journey to some of the most interesting places on our planet.
We will be looking at people who have successfully navigated the world in 80 days from the fictional Phileas Fogg, to real-world heroes like Mark Beaumont.
We will also be looking at some of the features that prevent us from taking a direct route around the world - Mountains. We will look into the geography and climate of high-alpine environments and how humans use or overcome them. We will also look at mapping in more detail, as well as the water cycle, and why high mountains are often rainy or snowy.
We will write poetically about Alpine environments, as well as creating a narrative about a mysterious alpine creature...
We dip further into the stories of Ancient Greece this half term, building on knowledge from Year 3. We will start with a reminder of some basics by looking at where and when Ancient Greece was, as well as reminding ourselves about some of their gods.
Next, we will look at the decade-long siege of Troy and find out more about some of the main characters involved. This is also a good time to investigate the weapons and methods of war from this period and maybe make some of our own!
Following this, we will investigate the character Odysseus and his long journey home from the Trojan War - what happened to him and what did he do about it?
Not being an expert in this period of history, I am looking forward to finding out all about Ancient Greece and am sure that there will be lots of weird (and probably gruesome) stories to entertain the class.
