Phonics / Early Reading
Intent
Early reading is at the heart of our curriculum, with the aim of ensuring that every child becomes a confident, fluent reader as quickly as possible. Using the Read Write Inc. (RWI) programme for phonics, we intend to develop children’s phonemic awareness, decoding skills, coupled with a lifelong love of reading.
We prioritise early identification of pupils who may need additional support, ensuring that no child falls behind. Our approach is rooted in high expectations, consistency, and a belief that all children can succeed in reading through systematic, synthetic phonics teaching.
Implementation
Read Write Inc. is delivered daily through well-structured, fast-paced lessons that follow a consistent routine across the school. Pupils are grouped according to their phonics knowledge and are regularly assessed to ensure they are taught at the correct level.
Staff are fully trained in the RWI approach, ensuring fidelity to the programme and high-quality teaching. Lessons include a strong focus on decoding, blending, segmenting, and comprehension, alongside regular opportunities for partner work and oral rehearsal.
Additional targeted interventions are in place for pupils who require further support, helping them to catch up quickly and confidently. This support is offered regardless of year group so that all pupils are able to leave our school with a good reading fluency.
Impact
The Early Reading / Phonics Leader takes a proactive approach in supporting staff knowledge to ensure they deliver high quality phonics and reading sessions for pupils.
Data shows that the ongoing, rigorous analysis of data and CPD for staff is improving outcomes for our children.
Pupils develop confidence, fluency, and accuracy in reading, enabling them to access a broad and balanced curriculum.
Furthermore, our pupils demonstrate a positive attitude towards reading, with many showing enthusiasm and independence in choosing and engaging with texts. Ultimately, our approach ensures that children are well-prepared for the next stage of their education as capable and motivated readers.
