Geography
"Geography is learning about Earth's land, water, air, and living things."
Southtown Primary pupils.
Intent
We aim to instil a curiosity about the world and for our children to gain a greater understanding of our world and to investigate, question and observe it. We aim for children to know what ‘Geography’ is and to know that it involves the study of lands, features and the Earth and physical and human processes. Children will learn to compare their environment to other environments around the world. Children will take part in field work to develop hands on experience.
Implementation
Geography is taught with a focus on different themes throughout the year. Geographical vocabulary is introduced and reinforced throughout the learning process. The local area is utilised as well as field trips and off site visits to enhance learning.
From April 2023 children are being taught Geography using the CUSP Geography Curriculum. This curriculum is based around the substantive concepts of Locational Knowledge, Place Knowledge, Human and Physical Geography and Geographical Skills and Fieldwork.
Impact
Children’s Geography books show a broad and balanced Geography curriculum. Children gain knowledge of their local area and an understanding of both human and physical Geography. Children are able to use geographical vocabulary to explain their learning. Children are able to make links to previous learning in Geography. Children are able to convey what they already know and what they would like to find out more about in Geography. Children are equipped to move on to their next stage of learning in Geography.
