Year 5 Expectations
Year 5 marks a significant step in Key Stage 2, building upon prior learning and preparing students for the transition to Year 6. In Year 5, we expect students to develop greater independence in their learning, taking responsibility for their work and demonstrating resilience when faced with challenges. They will refine their skills in reading, writing, and mathematics, tackling more complex concepts and applying their knowledge in a variety of contexts. We encourage active participation in class discussions and collaborative learning, fostering strong communication and teamwork skills. Throughout the year, we aim to nurture a love of learning and a strong sense of or school motto 'Ready, Respectful, Safe' equipping students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed.
Homework
Year 5 homework reinforces classroom learning and develops independent study skills. Weekly tasks typically include reading, spellings, times tables practice, and a literacy or numeracy activity. Homework is set on Wednesday and due on the following, allowing time for completion. We encourage children to manage their time effectively and seek support if needed, fostering responsibility and good study habits for future learning into year six and beyond.
Reading records will be checked weekly and children who are reading regularly ( three times a week) will be rewarded with house-points.
Our Curriculum Offer
Year 5 offers a rich and engaging curriculum designed to challenge and inspire. Students delve into diverse topics across subjects like history, geography, science, and the arts, fostering critical thinking and creativity. Core skills in literacy and mathematics are further developed, preparing them for the demands of upper Key Stage 2. To enhance learning beyond the classroom, Year 5 students will have the opportunity to participate in exciting trips, which may include a local museum, a historical site or a nature reserve providing valuable real-world experiences that complement their studies.
