Year 1 - Penguin Class
Welcome to Penguin Class web page. Here you will find some photos of the learning that the children are doing in school and also I shall upload newsletters and curriculum documents. Hopefully this will give you an idea of the type of things we get up to.
The transition to a new year group is challenging in lots of different ways. Children are adapting to a new environment, new teachers and different routines. People often say "It's harder in Year 1, it won't be like Reception, you have to work hard in Year 1." It's important to remember that the children in Reception work very hard - through play activities. In Year 1 there is less learning through play and more "formal" teaching. Each year group brings challenges of a different kind, and as all children are different it is important that the learning is appropriate and differentiate for your child so they are able to make progress. We do continue to learn through play, using practical equipment to enhance learning, and I aim to make activites fun and creative. Penguin Class is never boring - and we do lots of singing!
We follow the National Curriculm and teach a broad and balanced curriculum. There are also after school clubs that your child can join so keep a look out for those. The priority is for your child to feel safe, cared for, and enjoying an environment where they are motivated to learn.
Keep in touch with me via Class Dojo too, and you can also message me on there if you need to. I aim to answer during school hours but if it's important, or related to an absence, please call the school office. . No question or worry is too small. Enjoy the term!
KInd regards,
Jo Birks
